The above comprehensive analysis of all 38 car brands in India as of Aug’17 clearly shows that the no. of luxury & budget brands are exactly equal and are also evenly distributed across each of the 4 tiers. This comparison has been done objectively, where the general perception of each brand in the eye of the average person has not been taken into account as opinions may vary with each individual, based on the following factors:-
  • Brands have been arranged in decreasing order of their premiumness, where luxury quotient of a brand has been assumed to be directly proportional to its pricing.
  • Entry level models of luxury brands have been used for the comparison in contrast with flagship offerings from budget brands, as a major chunk of those in India that are reasonably well-off but not ‘filthy rich’ tend to buy cars in the range starting from ~10L to upwards of ~40L, where high end offerings from budget brands take on lower trims of luxury brands head on. Such a basis for classification also makes sense as the price point at which an entry level luxury car is offered clearly displays the brand’s philosophy to incline towards or away from sales volumes, whereas higher trims of budget brands represent their attempt to break into the luxury segment.
  • For a brand to be considered as luxury, it should have no offering at or below ~10L for exclusivity sake & should at least have one model at or above ~40L contributing to the premium image of the brand. This is why certain brands like Nissan and Ford which in spite of having some iconic offerings like the GT-R & the Mustang respectively miss out from the list of luxury car brands in India.
